Madonna Musica Martes - 04/17/2012

Today I wanted to share a song that doesn't get the respect it deserves. Released as the second single from the Like A Virgin album, MATERIAL GIRL was a song that became a misunderstood anthem. While people use the term 'Material Girl' to mean someone who loves material things, the song is actually meant to spoof wealth and those who have it. Madonna wants love in a relationship, not wealth.

Over the years, Madonna has only performed this song on four of her tours. The best version, in my opinion, is the version from her Blond Ambition Tour. Five years after the release of the song, Madonna knew that people were taking the song way too serious. She wanted to remind people that the song was meant to be a parody of 'material love'. This performance features Madonna spoofing her Mid Western heritage, among other things. This performance is taken from the final night of the Blond Ambition Tour in 1990. It features the now-classic lyric change where Madonna says 'Bitch' instead of 'Rich'. So here is Madonna & company singing about material obsession, Material Girl. Enjoy!
